PRESS RELEASE - Athens, January 11th, 2006

Subject: THE GREEK FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY OF ALEXANDRIA

On December 19th 2005 the ''Greek Friends of the Library of Alexandria" organized an event at the Amphitheatre of the War Museum of Athens. The event was co-coordinated by the President of the b.o.d. Former Minister Mr. Andreas Zaimis. Mrs. Marianna Vardinogianni, member of the board of trustees of the library and Ambassador of good will of UNESCO representing the library greeted the participants.

The speakers of the event were the distinguished: Mr. Leandros Rakintzis, who presented the proceedings of the organization, Brigadier General Nikos Kourkoumelis who described the creation and the destruction of the ancient library of Alexandria, Professor Emmanuel Giannakoudakis who described the amazing technical and IT characteristics of the new library and Mr. Spyros Kamalakis who analyzed the relation between the library of Alexandria, the Greeks of Egypt and the Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria. The event was concluded with a short film about the library narrated by the archeologist Ioanna Rakintzis.

The aim of the event was to inform the public about the scope of the organization (established 15 years ago) and its accomplishments mainly on promoting the Greek character and heritage of the "Bibliotheca Alexandrina".

As the president of the bod Mr. Andreas Zaimis mentioned during his opening speech all the members of the organization are very distinguished persons that do not seek publicity or exposure of their work, but simply offer their work voluntarily because they believe, which is true, the importance of the scope of the organization for Greece and the Library itself. Most of the Greek public ignores the organizations existence and its accomplishments. Contrary to that, as the late ethnarch Constantine Karamanlis said, "Abroad we are going well" the organization is quite well known abroad and especially to Egypt.

During the inauguration of the Library in 2002 several head of states attended among which Hosni Mubarak, President of Egypt, Queen Sofia of Spain, Jacque Shirac, President of France, Constantine Stephanopoulos President of the Hellenic Republic the former ministers of Greece George Papandreou Foreign Affairs, Evangelos Venizelos, Culture, Dimitris Avramopoulos Mayor of Athens etc. During that ceremony Mr. Andreas Zaimis representing the ''Friends of the Library'' worldwide and in cooperation with the Library's administration and the Egyptian Presidency presented a small golden statue replica of Prometheus to Mrs. Mubarak president of the trustees of the Library and wife of the President of the Republic of Egypt as symbolic gift of appreciation and recognition of her efforts for the creation of the "Bibliotheca Alexandrina".

The president of the bod Mr. Zaimis informed the attendees also that the Organization paid tribute to two of its founding members who offered outstanding services to their country and the organization namely the late Solon Kydoniatis, professor of the University, President of the Greek Academy who represented UNESCO in Greece and the late Athanassios Sioulas, public prosecutor of the Supreme Court of Appeal, member of the board of directors.
